A series of programmes was launched by the Expolanka Group to provide relief to the people affected by the Tsunami of the 26th December 2004 along the coastal areas of the Southern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka.
Donations of dry food items, drinking water, infant milk food, medicine, mats, clothing and other urgent relief items were donated to 1000 families in a refugee camp in Hambantota in the Southern Province. Medical items were also handed over to two hospitals in the area. To support the ongoing relief operations, we assisted as the local coordinator and distributor of donations we received from our overseas customers, partners, investors and employees in form of cash as well as in kind.
Expolanka started a housing project in Beruwela, to build 60 X 500 sq.ft comfortable homes for Tsunami victims there. Laying of foundation stones for the project commenced on the 19th of January 2005.
Shop keepers in Ullai, Kudakalli and Pasarachennai in the Eastern Province were supported with funds to help them re-start trading. Single mothers were given cash donations to help with their immediate needs. It is hoped that the social and economic activities of families in selected affected areas were to some extent rebuilt with the assistance of these funds.
An outbound motor for a boat belonging to an affected family in Mirissa was donated to sustain their eco-tourism business. In Arugam Bay, a tractor was provided to better facilitate distribution of relief. Other projects provided school uniforms and stationary to the children in selected areas.
