Expolanka Group Provides Support for Tsunami Victims

A series of programmes were launched by the Expolanka Group to provide relief to people affected by the Tsunami of December 2004.

Donations of dry food items, drinking water, infant milk food, medicine, mats, clothing and other urgent relief items were donated to 1000 families in a refugee camp in Hambantota in the Southern Province. Medical items were also handed over to two hospitals in the area. To support the ongoing relief operations, we assisted as the local coordinator and distributor of donations from our overseas customers, partners, investors and employees in cash as well as in-kind.

In January 2005, Expolanka started a housing project in Beruwela to build comfortable, 60 X 500 sq ft homes for Tsunami victims. Shopkeepers in Ullai, Kudakalli and Pasarachennai in the Eastern Province were supported with funds to help them recommence trade. Single mothers were given cash donations to help with their immediate needs. We hope that the social and economic activities of families in affected areas were to some extent rebuilt with the assistance of these funds.

An outbound motor for the boat of an affected family in Mirissa was donated to sustain their eco-tourism business. In Arugam Bay, a tractor was provided to better facilitate relief distribution. Other projects provided school uniforms and stationary to children in selected areas.
